I got it from that person at that thing that time. I love it and play with it all the time!" Sound familiar? I hate to be brutal about it, but organizing your kids room is best done when they are out of the house. Okay, lets say you have gotten through phase 1, and you have weeded out the junk. Also, take the time to weed out good toys that your kids simply have outgrown.
Peg boards, for all of those toys in your childs room that do not really have a place to call home, a creative way to save space and eliminate clutter is to purchase an inexpensive peg board. Paint it the accent colour of your childs room and then neatly hang all those odds and ends. Examples may be things such as barbie accessories or stuffed animals that seem to be all over the place. For smaller items, find a cloth tote bag, place items inside and then hang on pegs.
Kids are not aware how important it is to have a clean room, and they can not exactly understand this if you explain it to them. What most mothers need to understand is that explaining things to kids alone would not really make the picture stick. Kids follow more by example. Remember the phrase "monkey-see, monkey-do"?
Adding shelves to one wall will give you a large space where toys and stuffed animals can be stored. This also puts everything within the childs reach and makes it easy for them to get their toys and to put them away again. Using storage containers that fit under the bed is an excellent way to store out of season clothing so you will have more space for the ones that are needed.
